Jazlyn woke up in a strange, very small bed. There were odd noises and lights and machines. She started to worry when she realised she was in Mamu Carson's working place - bad things always happened here. But then she turned around and Ami was sleeping next to her, with Abu in the chair and Dr. Kav in the next bed. She remembered feeling sick, but that was gone now, even her head felt light and clear. She was really hungry though. She reached over and gently tugged on Ami's arm. "Ami, Abu...wake up."

Jazlyn walked into the room where Ami, Abu and Dr. Kav were sleeping. "Abu! Ami!" She whined, trying to wake them up. Her chin and the front of her night shirt was covered in vomit and her usually curly, bouncy hair was stuck down to her forehead as she sweated profusely. Tears streamed down both cheeks. "Abu, please, I don't feel good." She said a little louder this time, though her voice was still weak.

She was sitting in the kitchen, laughing and playing with Immuta. Ami was making laurian. Abu was going to come home early and they were all going to eat it in the baranda. Then they were Wraith. She didn't see them come but they were everywhere. And they were eating her Ami, but now it was the new Ami. And Abu was there too and everyone was screaming....
She awoke with a scream and scrambled to get out of the bed, pushing the covers frantically to the floor and almost tripping over them in her hurry to get away. She's done this so many nights that she heads straight for Abu's room without thinking.
"Abu! Abu! There are Wraith here. Please Abu! Help me." She shouts shrilly, entering the room and waking up the two sleeping men.

It's been night-time two times already but she stays curled up, crying, and hiding under the bed. She's so scared that her hands haven't stopped shaking and there's no-one to talk to, nothing to do, other than cry. Her tummy stopped rumbling ages ago, she's gone past hungry now. But she knows she has to eat. Ami always said so. That makes her cry some more. Ami's never gonna tell her that again.
Slowly, bravely, she gets out from the bed and doesn't look at the floor at all. She knows what's there. The picture keeps coming back to her when she tries to sleep. With her head high, almost looking at the ceiling she goes to the kitchen. There's water in a carrai and she drinks it thankfully. She really doesn't feel like eating, but for Ami's sake she takes a few bites of the falafal. Straight away she's sick on the floor. When she looks down, it's Zahra little bhein she's been sick on.
Screaming, she runs all the way back to under the bed and curls herself even tighter than before, making both her arms and legs and neck hurt lots. "Ami, Abu, please, please, please come back. I'll be so good. I'll do everything you say. I'll even do the chaat on the floors. Please." She says as loudly as she has the energy to manage anymore.

The big alarm was ringing. Her whole life people had been telling her stories of the big alarm. It had been used once, a long time ago, when the Wraith used to come to eat them. The alarm would go off and everyone knew where to hide so they stayed safe. That was a long time ago, before Ami and Abu were born, even before Bari Ami was born. The mean Wraith had gone away. So now no-one knows what to do. Everyone is scared and running around. She doesn't know what to do either so she sits down on her bed with Imutta on her lap and strokes him. He makes his happy noise and she smiles at him, kissing his ear.
She starts counting to herself, she's only up to panch when Ami picks her up and kisses her again and again. She's crying and that makes her cry too. Then Abu comes, he's not crying, he's always so strong. He takes her from Ami and hugs her tightly. Then he's carrying her and running. Ami is next to them, she's holding Immuta. They go to the Drife's house. Lots of people are there. She can see Myeisha holding her Ami's hand.
"You're such a good girl, Jazlyn." Abu says putting her on the chataai on the floor. "Now you have to stay here with Ami and make no noise ok? I'm going to go fight the Wraith and we're going to keep them away from you."
"Abu," she shouts holding on to his arm. She doesn't want Abu to go. She wants to stay with him. Ami holds her next to her body and Abu turns away and leaves. She thinks he was crying too, but her Abu never cries. It makes her more scared.
Ami starts singing to her in a whisper and slowly she falls asleep. She's awoken by Ami putting her and Myeisha under the bed. "Stay here and stay quiet." She says in her 'Jazlyn you have to do exactly as I say without any fuss' voice and she nods, holding on to her friend.
Ami goes into the next room and a few minutes later, they start hearing loud screams. She starts to cry again, but does it without making any noise. Just as Ami said. She'll tell Ami how good she was, then Ami will make her some Laurelian and they'll all be happy again. The screams in the next room stop and she thinks maybe the bad Wraith have gone. But then someone comes into the room.
With the door open, Immuta runs in too. She wants to tell him to come hide with them but she's being quiet. They don't see what happens, just Immuta gets thrown across the room and there's lots of blood coming out of him. Like when she fell from the tree and hurt her knee, but lots, lots more.
Myeisha gasps really quietly but the Wraith hears and he takes her from under the bed. Without thinking she quickly moves further away, right next to the wall, covering her mouth with both hands to stop from crying out loud.
There's another scream in Myeisha's soft voice and then the Wraith leaves. She doesn't move. Ami told her to stay here so she will. Ami and Abu will be back to get her soon. Abu went to fight the Wraith and he would kill them all and then they can go home.
She doesn't know what to do so starts counting. She reaches beese and starts again, going again and again and again. But Ami and Abu don't come. They told her to stay here but everything's really quiet. She thinks the Wraith have definetly gone. Quietly she gets out from under the bed and goes to the next room. There are no Wraith, just Ardrans but everyone's changed. They all like old and wrinkly, like Bari Ami, but even more. This was what the stories said. This means they're all dead.
She screams and runs back into the other room, hiding under the bed, her head covered by her hands and starts crying and screaming as much as she wants. The Wraith have gone. Ami and Abu aren't here. No one can hear her.
